mytherapy.co.nz is a clinical psychology practice run by Ian Clayton, a New Zealand and Australian registered Clinical Psychologist who completed an honours degree and then clinical masters degree in psychology followed by a two years supervised clinical training and further postgraduate training in clinical-hypnosis.


After completing undergraduate psychology with distinctions, Ian Clayton graduated with an arts degree, and then a postgraduate honours degree in Psychology at the University of Adelaide with his thesis: The Social Construction of Co-dependency. He was awarded a Post Graduate Scholarship to study for a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology at the University of Adelaide and graduated in 1997. His thesis on the neuropsychology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) was later published in the American publication of the
Journal of Abnormal Psychology (Clayton, I. C., Richards, J. C., & Edwards, C. J. (1999). Selective Attention in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Journal of Abnormal Psychology, 108, 171-175. )

As well as maintaining private practice, Ian Clayton was employed in a full-time capacity for 7 years as a rural Clinical Psychologist within the South Australian Mental Health Service. During this time he treated people with depression and other mood disorders, anxiety and personality disorders. He has broad experience in diagnosis and treatment of the range of mental health problems. The South East Region Mental Health Service employed Ian Clayton in the position of senior clinical psychologist for the South East Region of South Australia from 1998 to 2006 

Ian Clayton immigrated to New Zealand with his partner and young son in 2006 and now lives in Hawkes Bay.

Ian Clayton in a registered clinical psychologist and maintains full membership of both the New Zealand Psychological Society (NzPS) and the Australian Psychological Society (APS). He is also a member of the Australian Society of Hypnosis (ASH), the Australian Association of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (AACBT), the International Association of Cognitive Psychotherapy (IACP) and the Australasian Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ASTSS).

As part of the statutory requirements for all clinical psychologists in New Zealand, Ian Clayton maintains fortnightly professional supervision with another New Zealand registered clinical psychologist. In addition to this however, he also maintains weekly supervision with two other clinical psychologists in Australia (his close professional colleagues).  Clients may be discussed during these periods of supervision but confidentiality is always maintained, and as far as possible the identity of the client being discussed is never disclosed. A client can of course request that their particular concerns not be disclosed in open supervision if they so wish.

Confidentiality

All personal information gathered by the psychologist during the provision of the psychological service will remain confidential and secure except when;

It is subpoenaed by a court;
Failure to disclose certain information would place the client or another person's life in imminent danger;
Your prior approval has been obtained to provide reports for a third party (e.g. a court or GP);
It is necessary to provide details to enforce the legal rights of Ian Clayton (e.g. essential details for debt collection) or;
A mandatory notification is required by law (in New Zealand, Psychologists are mandatory notifiers of suspected child abuse or of possible firearms risk). 

Confidentiality is controlled according to strict guidelines set down by the Australian and New Zealand Psychological Societies and their respective Psychological Boards. This is also provided in accordance with Legislation. 

Why a Clinical Psychologist?

Psychologists must be registered under government legislation to practice. Training involves at least 6 years of university training to Masters level and then two years supervised experience in assessing, treating and managing clinical conditions, human behaviour, feelings and thoughts. Psychologists are experts in the provision of a wide range of psychological therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Narrative Therapy and Hypnotherapy. Psychologists are the only professionals trained in the assessment of intellectual ability, cognitive functioning, memory and personality.

 

Referrals

Referrals are not generally required unless you have a related medical and/or psychiatric condition where a referral from your GP can be helpful. The ACC requires a formal referral and in such cases consult your health fund or case-manager.

 

Fee Structure

There is no fee for the first 30 min of the initial consultation. My hourly rate is then $100 NZ for each subsequent hour with a 10% same day payment discount for immediate settlement of accounts. 

 It is my aim to keep fees to a fair and affordable level. If the fee structure is not affordable to you, please feel free to discuss other possible options with me. I am sympathetic to the difficulties faced by individuals managing on government benefits, single parents and single income families.

The fees outlined apply to most services for individuals, couples and families, but different fees may apply to other services i.e. medical or medico-legal assessments and/or reports, critical incident stress debriefings, public seminars and presentations.
